Artist’s Statement
"Painting is the visual expression of creativity that points out the visible world around us, but more importantly, it should express the silent invisible world of thought, ideas and feelings."
I am glad to be an artist and live in this beautiful, quiet place - a place that suites my personality and stimulates my creative nature. I have been able to observe life; to marvel at its creation; to see color, form and beauty in all things. Although painting is a solitary journey, it has brought me closer to my fellow man - to the love, hate, joy, passion and sorrow called “life”.
My life’s goal is to be happy and share that happiness with others. I am happy because I do what I like to do – what I was meant to do. I am a professional artist. I've spent my years becoming a better painter and I have made my living through art.
There is a consistency in my work that unifies a diversity of subjects. I think in terms of color, shape and value. My paintings are well composed, exciting and expressive, be it landscape, still life, floral or portrait. The diversity means I am open to seeing all ways; that I am inspired by many things; that I enjoy life and can express that joy in my work. Each painting is a challenge and the learning process never ends.
“My favorite and best painting is always the next one.”
The wonderful thing about years of painting and teaching art is the knowledge I've accumulated, the ability to express myself in new and exciting ways and the opportunity to pay this knowledge forward.
“I am established but forever growing”.
About The Artist
Patricia A. Carlson is a multi-media artist, born and raised in Ontario, Canada now
living and working in the mountains of Northern California. Much of her work reflects the inspiration she derives from this vast, beautiful wilderness area and the tough people who call it home. All blend with past experience to make her work totally innovative and uniquely original.
The interpretive realism of her painting celebrates the simpler aspects of everyday life as well as the grandeur of the North American landscape. Her work invites the viewer to see the imagery around them ……… beauty in the commonplace ……. beauty in the understated extreme.
This artist prefers to let the subject dictate the medium rather than accept the limitations of any one. Because of Pat’s wide-ranging interests and technical mastery, she works in all mixed-media, in oils, acrylic, pencil, collage and watercolour. Carlson’s most recent work has been an exciting journey in “experimental mixed-media”. In addition to working full-time from her mountain studio, Pat is a college art instructor, judge, gallery owner, arts lecturer and published author. She conducts workshops in United States, Canada and Mexico in both experimental and traditional painting techniques.
Her work has won her numerous awards and honours in select juried shows and invitational exhibitions. It’s featured in major corporate, private and museum collections, both nationally and internationally. She has been honoured with “Master Status” awarded by her peers and is the recipient of several fine arts grants and fellowships. Carlson is a “listed” artist, honorary life-time member of several regional art leagues, nominated for membership in Who’s Who American Women, North American Artists, Wildlife Artists alliance, Oil Painters of America, Plein Air Painters, California Arts Council and The National Drawing Society.
